Out and about

4 en 5 meiSeveral events are organised in Wageningen every year. January starts with the Bluesfestival, the ultimate pub-crawl. In April and in November the Bergrace by Night is staged, a nightly run starting on the Wageningse Berg and finishing on the Grebbeberg in Rhenen. The race is run entirely in the dark and is characterised by the thousands of bobbing lights carried by the runners. The final challenging climb through the dark wood is traditionally highlighted by a thousand lighted candles placed along the route. The evening is concluded by a party in the Ouwehand Zoo’s Jungle restaurant in Rhenen. In cold winters there are plenty of skating possibilities in the Uiterwaarden, the low stretches of flooded land along the river.

The Bevrijdingsfestival  (Liberation festival) is in May and so are the celebrations of May 4th and May 5th as well as the Capitulatie Bevrijdingstocht (Capitulation Liberation walk). Street theatre can be enjoyed in June during the Leeffestival (Live Festival). The big bicycle touring event, de Hel van Wageningen/Jan Janssen Classic, is also staged in June. The orientation days of WUR (Wageningen University) for first-year students take place in August. The Open Havendag (an open day in the harbour), Open Monumentendag (free access to all monuments) and the Rhine Town Jazz Festival are all organised in September.
